Digital books are the digital versions of print books, including downloadable audiobooks for listening and eBooks for on-screen reading. Upland Public Library offers three online collections of digital books: bestselling fiction and nonfiction, current topics, and favorite classics from OverDrive; and picture books, chapter books, and puzzles for kids and developing readers from Tumblebooks and BookFLIX. Once you download an eBook or digital audiobook to your computer or laptop, you can view or listen to it, or transfer it to a supported portable device. Many Overdrive titles, depending on publisher permissions, may be copied to CDs. In addition, Overdrive offers mobile apps to download directly to your cell phone. The Library also has pocket-sized, pre-loaded digital book players called Playaways. You can listen to Playaways with your personal headphones or use an FM transmitter to listen through your car stereo.

Courtesy of the California State Library, Scholastic BookFLIX is an online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to cultivate a love of reading and learning.  This engaging resource will help early readers spanning grades PreK-3 develop and practice essential reading skills, introducing students to a world of exploration and knowledge.

 

BookFLIX includes the following content and resources:

• 100 classic video storybooks each paired with a related nonfiction eBook (200 titles total).
• Spanish-language versions of 27 pairs. (54 titles total)
• Read-aloud and highlighting supports so students can hear and see each book narrated and also hear definitions of key words and directions for each activity.
• Educational games and activities so children can show what they have learned in fun and engaging ways.
• Safe, age-appropriate web links selected by Scholastic’s editors so kids can extend their learning on a topic—and feed their inquisitiveness.
• Meet the author section to learn more about the author of each fiction book.

TumbleBook Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books and talking chapter books, which teach kids and other developing readers the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book, which you can read or have read to you. Words are highlighted as they are spoken, which helps to reinforce sight reading and pronunciation.

Now you can borrow audiobooks with no cassettes, no CDs, no computers, and no downloads. Just plug in your own earphones, and listen to a great story. The Playaway® is half the size of a deck of cards. Each player can hold content that ranges from 6 to 24 hours of play time. Using clearly marked buttons, Playaway® gives listeners the option of controlling the speed of a narrator’s voice, all while easily moving both forward and back through the audio selections. Its small size and the accompanying lanyard make portability easy. They are ideal for runners, walkers, commuters, and anyone who doesn’t have access to a tape or cd player or an Internet-accessible computer. The rental fee is $2.00 per 3-week loan period. Earphones and AAA batteries are available at the Circulation Desk for purchase.

To get a list of Playaway titles in the CITRUS catalog, start by clicking on the red Search Catalog button at the top of any Library webpage. Search for DBP as a word or phrase search and click on the blue Search button, or you can follow these steps to do a Call Number search:

• Click on Power Search (below the search box).
• Click on CALL_NUMBER in the Catalog Searches box.
• Type DBP and then click on the blue Search button.
